Harnessing AI in the VCFSE Sector: Embracing Innovation with Responsibility
Introduction
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming how many sectors operate, including the Voluntary, Community, Faith, and Social Enterprise (VCFSE) sector. 61% of charities now report using AI tools.1 While it offers many promising opportunities, AI must be adopted with care and clarity of purpose. At CVS Cheshire East, we’re committed to exploring the potential of AI while putting people, ethics, and inclusion at the heart of the conversation.
Why AI Matters in the VCFSE Sector
AI tools are increasingly accessible and can support day-to-day functions in small charities and community groups. Some practical examples include:
- Streamlining admin tasks such as summarising meeting minutes or writing policy drafts
- Generating ideas for funding bids or blog content
- Analysing service data to identify trends and community needs
- Improving accessibility, for example offering summarised versions of long documents
Used thoughtfully, these tools can free up staff and volunteers to focus more on meaningful human work.
Responsible Use: The CVSCE Approach
We believe AI should augment, not replace, the vital human elements of the VCFSE sector. Our organisational stance is one of cautious curiosity: we support exploration, provided it’s done transparently, ethically, and with the needs of the community in mind.
We’ll soon be publishing an AI Usage Policy that outlines how we approach AI internally. This includes:
- Reviewing all AI-generated content for accuracy and tone
- Avoiding the input of any personal, confidential, or sensitive data
- Recognising the limitations and potential biases in AI tools
- Prioritising human accountability and oversight
- Considering the environmental impact of AI by using it thoughtfully and only where it adds meaningful value – research suggests that some generative AI tools can consume significantly more energy than traditional digital tools2.
Amplifying Sector Voices in National Conversations
We're not alone in calling for a thoughtful, inclusive approach. The recently published response from the Charity AI Taskforce to the UK Government’s AI action plan provides additional information.
