Volunteer Profile – Rob, A&E

How and/or why did you become a volunteer for us?

I started volunteering when I retired as a GP seven years ago. I wanted to help the NHS but without the pressure or responsibility of my previous work. I find it important to have some structure to the week and enjoy feeling that I am being helpful.

Do you feel that what you do for us is rewarding?

I tried various roles in the hospital, and have settled on helping in A&E. I spend most of my time making tea and coffee for the patients and staff and clearing away. This is a much more useful role than it sounds because the staff are so busy they do not always have time to do it. I feel very much part of the team, and they frequently thank me which is nice. I also chat to staff and the patients and do any other simple tasks that I am asked to do. I look forward to my shift and enjoy what I am doing.

Would you recommend it to any other volunteers?

Yes. I have recruited two friends to do the same work, and they enjoy it as well.

When not volunteering how else do you spend your time?

I do lots of exercise, and many of our holidays involve hiking. I am a keen amateur magician and wood worker.I also volunteer for Citizens Advice.

Anything else you would like to share or add?

The volunteer department at the hospital is well run, and we are valued. There are lots of roles to choose from, so there should be something to suit everyone. Our blue volunteer polo shirts make us stand out, and there is a good camaraderie amongst the volunteers.
