Why do boundaries matter?

In the non-profit sector, building trust is essential – but it can also test our boundaries. Supporting vulnerable people often means hearing personal stories, offering comfort, and being present in difficult moments. It’s meaningful work, but it can blur the line between being supportive and becoming too involved – sometimes leading to safeguarding concerns.

For small groups, navigating this can feel like walking a tightrope. That’s why CVS is committed to helping organisations across Cheshire East understand and maintain professional boundaries so staff and volunteers can build safe, respectful relationships that protect everyone involved.

A sector-wide priority

The Charity Commission’s 2024–2029 strategy places a strong emphasis on preventative risk management, transparency, and building public trust, all of which depend on having clear professional boundaries in place. When teams understand where those lines are, they're better equipped to protect both the people they serve and the reputation of the charity itself.

Training around boundaries isn’t just good practice, it’s part of what strong governance and ethical leadership looks like in today’s sector.

CVS training with local groups

Over the past two years, we've been proud to support over 170 individuals from 20 organisations in building professional, resilient teams with our Introduction to Professional Boundaries training.

This essential training explores what professional boundaries are, how to set them, and what to do when they’re challenged. It’s particularly valuable for staff and volunteers in public-facing roles, but equally important for fostering respectful, professional interactions within teams and helping everyone feel safe, supported, and confident in their roles.

Throughout our sessions, participants have shared real-life challenges and insights. One common theme, especially in befriending roles, is the difficulty of maintaining the line between personal connection and professional responsibility. An inspiring story came from a participant who, after receiving support from a local charity, went on to become a befriender themselves – showing how powerful personal growth and community support can be.

So, what can your organisation do to set Boundaries?

  • Review your organisation’s policies to ensure boundaries are clearly set and followed by staff and volunteers

If you are struggling to access our training for whatever reason (financial, technological or personal), please get in touch – we are committed to making our training accessible to all in the sector.
