This year's CVS conference has the theme of 'resilience'. We have come through a very challenging period, and we want to use the event to reflect on the resilience that we have had as a sector and as individuals and look at what we can do together to tackle some key issues. The conference will feature key talks and presentations from guest speakers and breakout sessions for groups to get involved, share ideas and lend their voice on how we can cultivate resilience at all levels in our community.

The conference will include talks and presentations from:

Everybody Sport and Recreation - Organisational resilience

We'll be hearing from either Peter Hartwell CEO or Kerry Shea Executive Director of Everybody Sport and Recreation, their experience during the national crisis, the impact it has had on their services and income and the decisions made to build resilience into the organisation to ensure sustainability.

ThreeFifty9 - Personal Resilience

What is mental fitness and how is it effectively and positively managed? We'll be hearing from Anthony Taylor founder of threefifty9.com, an organisation founded to improve the quality of management and leadership through better individual mental fitness. Anthony will also be leading a breakout session on individual resilience later in the conference.

Citizens Advice Cheshire East - Community Resilience

Liz Shaw, Chief Officer of Citizens Advice Cheshire East will be sharing with us the overview of the current needs of the community of people supported by Citizens Advice who face or are affected by financial poverty and the domino effect that has on food poverty, physical health and limitations on other basic living needs.

The CVS AGM and the future of our services.

During this section, CEO Caroline Whitney will share how we have managed over the last 18 months and our financial and operational resilience. We will also share the results of our consultation with members, the wider VCFS and volunteers from earlier in the year.

We'll also be unveiling our new strategy and exciting new programmes of support. These programmes are being created in response to feedback received during the consultation, aim to provide more concise support across our services, and are designed to better meet the current needs of our members and the wider community.

We are still keen to recruit new Trustees to our Board, particularly from our member organisations. So, if you are interested please visit our Trustee pages https://www.cvsce.org.uk/join-our-board

Breakout sessions

As ever peer to peer support and sharing is at the heart of our event and we will have 4 Breakout sessions that aim to build knowledge, share learning, and create connections.

This conference is the first time we are physically bringing the sector together since the first lockdown, while we are excited about this, please be assured we will be putting social distancing and other covid guidelines in place. We are also planning on running this as a hybrid event so if you can’t join us face to face you can still hear from the speakers and be part of the discussion virtually, although we won’t be able to share our lunch with you.

The Breakout sessions

You will have the opportunity to be part of two breakout sessions.

Breakout Session 1 - Community Resilience

Led by CVS Development Officer Natalie McGregor, this session is aimed at groups providing services to individuals and families facing poverty.

We all recognise that everyone, no matter where they live, should have the chance of a healthy and secure life; however, many are struggling to meet their needs.

VCFS organisations may not be able to resolve poverty, but we help people when they are facing insecurity and uncertainty due to finances. This session will bring together those with a common interest and discuss how we can work collectively and be more effective to deliver resilient services and support those who need to access the services.

This session builds on conversations that have happened through the CVS Community Transport, Food Distribution and Information and Advice Networks.

Breakout Session 2 – Organisation Resilience

Led by CVS Development Officer Aoife Middlemass, this session is aimed at Trustees and senior management.

Over the last 12 months, organisational governance and resilience have never been more important. Being able to weather change in an everchanging and sometimes turbulent environment is key to the sustainability of your organisation. We'll take the lessons we all have learnt during the national crisis and make this an opportunity for our community to grow stronger together.

CVS will also be showcasing the new Trustee programme we will be developing to support new and existing trustees, including how we can ensure that there is strong recruitment, induction and development programme for all Trustees in Cheshire East.

This session will build upon conversations that have happened through the CVS Trustee and CEO Networks.

Breakout Session 3 – Personal Resilience

Led by Anthony Taylor, an accomplished and regular speaker about mental toughness, stress resilience and mental health.

Anthony runs ThreeFifty9, a mental skills speaking and training consultancy that specialises in equipping people and teams with the mental skills needed to thrive in today’s world. Focusing on developing personal and leadership performance through mental toughness and changing the story around mental health.

Anthony brings the experience of a 20-year career across the private and public sectors both nationally and internationally.

Attendees will be provided with a free copy of Anthony's book 'Mental Toughness Metaphors: Stories to build resilience for parents, coaches, trainers and thinkers'

Breakout Session 4 - Health Structures in Cheshire East

Led by CVS Chief Executive Caroline Whitney

Get updated on the changing health structures in Cheshire East and across Cheshire and Merseyside, work that has and is taking place, the placed-based partnerships, and ask how the voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise (VCFSE) sector would like to be involved?

This session is a follow-on update from the CVS VCFSE Collective Network meeting held in December 2021
